Leading from the front and the ground up: Cultural change in CHSP services – Connecting with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and Elders (online discussion forum)
The Statement of Rights coming in the new Aged Care Act enshrines the right for older people to receive aged care services that are culturally safe, culturally appropriate, trauma-aware and healing-informed; and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people a right to opportunities and assistance to stay connected to their community, Country and Island Home.
Our keynote speaker, Andrea Kelly, Interim First Nations Aged Care Commissioner, has engaged with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and communities across the Australian continent and will share stories and information about what is needed to strengthen cultural safety and improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ access to aged care services and the quality of their experiences in aged care.
This forum is open to all CHSP executive leaders and board members, regardless of size of your organisation or stage in this ongoing journey building cultural safety. This is an opportunity to learn from other providers’ experience and/or contribute to conversations about an aged care sector that not only meets requirements but strives for the right to cultural connection, safety and healing.
The forum will run over two 90-minute sessions. Participants will leave session 1 with:
- participants will have the opportunity to deliver insights and feedback directly to Andrea Kelly and the department and take part in an ongoing, two-way discourse
- greater understanding of your organisations’ responsibility, and your responsibility as leaders, for cultural safety and trauma aware service delivery under the incoming Aged Care Act
- appreciation of cultural change and building cultural safety as a journey (not a destination or tick box), and clearer perspective on where your organisation is up to on this journey.
- connections to resources or support and identified next steps for your organisation.
