SUMMARY:Trauma Aware\, Healing Informed Care for Forgotten Australians and Care Leavers (webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Free training webinars are available for aged care staff on Trauma Aware\, Healing Informed Aged Care for Forgotten Australians and Care Leavers. With the Strengthened Standards and new legislative requirements to provide trauma aware\, healing informed aged care\, this work is more important than ever. The Real Care the Second Time Around Project worked alongside people who identify as Forgotten Australians or Care Leavers to co-design the training and resources. \nReal Care the Second Time Around Project\nThis webinar is part of the Real Care the Second Time Around project\, designed to support aged care providers to provide trauma aware services for care leavers\, and to give Care Leavers practical information about the questions they can ask and what to expect in aged care. The resources and training are free and are available at www.realcaretoolkit.com.au. The training and resources will assist any provider wishing to apply for specialisation under the Verification Framework. The Real Care the Second Time Around Project has been developed by Helping Hand Aged Care\, Relationships Australia South Australia and Flinders University. \nForgotten Australians and Care Leavers*\nForgotten Australians and Care Leavers refers to the 500\,000 children that were placed into institutional and out-of-home care in Australia in the last century. Of this group\, 7\,000 were former child migrants\, 50\,000 were indigenous children from the Stolen Generations and over 440\,000 were non-indigenous children.  Forgotten Australians and Care Leavers often face barriers to accessing aged care and the idea of requiring care as they age can be deeply retraumatising as their experiences as children in care were often traumatic.\n*We respect that not everyone will identify with the terminology ‘Forgotten Australians’. \nAudience: The training is suitable for everyone working in aged care. While there is a focus on residential care\, the learnings also apply to home care. \nCost: Free to attend \nAny questions\, please contact clewis@helpinghand.org.au \nMultiple Dates: Each of the following webinars are the same – you only need to attend once. \nWednesday 20 August 2025\, 1:00pm to 2:30pm Sydney time (here)\nWednedsay 17 September 2025\, 1:00pm to 2:30pm Sydney time (here)\nFriday 15 October 2025\, 2:00pm to 3:30pm Sydney time (here)\nWednesday 26 November 2025\, 2:00pm to 3:30pm Sydney time (here)\nWednesday 10 December 2025\, 2:00pm to 3:30pm Sydney time (here)

SUMMARY:National Reconciliation Week (27 May to 3 June)
DESCRIPTION:National Reconciliation Week (NRW) is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories\, cultures\, and achievements\, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. \nThe dates for NRW remain the same each year; 27 May to 3 June. These dates commemorate two significant milestones in the reconciliation journey – the successful 1967 referendum\, and the High Court Mabo decision respectively. \nReconciliation must live in the hearts\, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward\, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community\, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. \nWe all have a role to play when it comes to reconciliation\, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples\, histories\, cultures\, and futures. \nFurther learning here \nFind your local event here \nDownload resources and posters here \nTranslated resources can be found here \n

SUMMARY:National Sorry Day
DESCRIPTION:On 26 May each year\, Sorry Day marks the anniversary of the tabling of the Bringing Them Home report in the Australian Parliament in 1997 and commemorates Stolen Generations survivors. The report was a landmark truth telling process\, sadly almost 30 years on a number of the report’s 54 recommendations remain unmet. \nRemaining Stolen Generations survivors are ageing\, and many do not have access to a full and fair redress scheme\, or to the records that hold keys to their stories. \nThe time to act is now. We must ensure that Stolen Generations survivors are supported to age with dignity and respect. \nLearn more and find a local community event here
