SUMMARY:Older Person Abuse in the Northern Territory: A Systemic Advocacy Journey (webinar)
DESCRIPTION:How do you create change in a place where there are almost no services\, no legislation and limited recognition of elder abuse? \nAgainst this backdrop\, you’ll hear exactly how this occurred from Elina Beswick\, an Aged Care Advocate at Darwin Community Legal Service. \nElina will talk about: \n\nThe landscape in the NT: why service gaps and lack of frameworks make this issue so urgent\nThe advocacy journey: the preconceptions\, challenges and turning points that shaped this project\nBuilding momentum: how they started a network of services and created a roadmap to implement the National Plan to +Prevent Abuse and Mistreatment of Older Australians in the NT.\n\nThis isn’t just a Northern Territory story – it’s a story of how change happens. You’ll hear about the persistence\, lessons\, and strategies that others can draw on when advocating for older people\, whether you’re in policy\, frontline work\, or community leadership. \nHosted by Elder Abuse Action Australia \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Home Care: The strengthened Quality Standards - Preparing for the changes
DESCRIPTION:Free online live-learning session delivered by the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission. \nA facilitated session which supports managers\, educators and leaders from Australian government-funded home services providers to consider the requirements of the strengthened Quality Standards (the Standards) in the context of a real-life scenario. \nThe session uses a detailed case study to explore the application of the Standards and key considerations for providers. While specific Outcomes and Actions are considered as part of the case study\, we will not be discussing the application of the Standards to individual service settings. The session does not cover all the Outcomes and Actions of the Standards\, but draws on key elements relevant to the case study as an example of how providers might consider their obligations. The session provides opportunities to discuss approaches and ideas with other participants. \nRegister here \nYou can register for sessions through the Commission’s Aged Care Learning Information Solution (Alis) platform.

DESCRIPTION:Free training webinars are available for aged care staff on Trauma Aware\, Healing Informed Aged Care for Forgotten Australians and Care Leavers. With the Strengthened Standards and new legislative requirements to provide trauma aware\, healing informed aged care\, this work is more important than ever. The Real Care the Second Time Around Project worked alongside people who identify as Forgotten Australians or Care Leavers to co-design the training and resources. \nReal Care the Second Time Around Project\nThis webinar is part of the Real Care the Second Time Around project\, designed to support aged care providers to provide trauma aware services for care leavers\, and to give Care Leavers practical information about the questions they can ask and what to expect in aged care. The resources and training are free and are available at www.realcaretoolkit.com.au. The training and resources will assist any provider wishing to apply for specialisation under the Verification Framework. The Real Care the Second Time Around Project has been developed by Helping Hand Aged Care\, Relationships Australia South Australia and Flinders University. \nForgotten Australians and Care Leavers*\nForgotten Australians and Care Leavers refers to the 500\,000 children that were placed into institutional and out-of-home care in Australia in the last century. Of this group\, 7\,000 were former child migrants\, 50\,000 were indigenous children from the Stolen Generations and over 440\,000 were non-indigenous children.  Forgotten Australians and Care Leavers often face barriers to accessing aged care and the idea of requiring care as they age can be deeply retraumatising as their experiences as children in care were often traumatic.\n*We respect that not everyone will identify with the terminology ‘Forgotten Australians’. \nAudience: The training is suitable for everyone working in aged care. While there is a focus on residential care\, the learnings also apply to home care. \nCost: Free to attend \nAny questions\, please contact clewis@helpinghand.org.au \nMultiple Dates: Each of the following webinars are the same – you only need to attend once. \nWednesday 20 August 2025\, 1:00pm to 2:30pm Sydney time (here)\nWednedsay 17 September 2025\, 1:00pm to 2:30pm Sydney time (here)\nFriday 15 October 2025\, 2:00pm to 3:30pm Sydney time (here)\nWednesday 26 November 2025\, 2:00pm to 3:30pm Sydney time (here)\nWednesday 10 December 2025\, 2:00pm to 3:30pm Sydney time (here)
