SUMMARY:Strengthened Quality Standards: Home care (online workshop)
DESCRIPTION:The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission is running free online workshops on the Strengthened Quality Standards. These sessions are designed for Home Care service providers. \nThe workshops provide an overview of the structure and requirements of the strengthened Quality Standards\, and how they can be applied in your service setting. \nThe session uses a detailed case study to explore the application of the Standards and key considerations for providers. While specific Outcomes and Actions are considered as part of the case study\, we will not be discussing the application of the Standards to individual service settings. The session does not cover all the Outcomes and Actions of the Standards\, but draws on key elements relevant to the case study as an example of how providers might consider their obligations. \nThe session provides opportunities to discuss approaches and ideas with other participants. \nVarious dates to choose from: \n\n5 November 2025\, 10:00am – 11:30am (AEDT)\n18 November 2025\, 1:30pm – 3:00pm (AEDT)\n2 December 2025\, 11:00am – 12:30pm (AEDT)\n\nRegistration here . \nLogin to your ALIS account (Aged Care Learning Information Solution) and click Live Learning Sessions. \nOverview of Commission’s Live Learning Sessions here

SUMMARY:First Nations Elders Wellbeing Conference
DESCRIPTION:The 2025 National First Nations Elders Wellbeing Conference will be a transformative event\, bringing together aged care professionals\, service managers\, and frontline workers to engage in crucial discussions about the landmark changes introduced by Australia’s new aged care reforms. This conference provides a vital platform to network\, share insights\, and collaborate on the implementation of these reforms\, with a particular focus on My Aged Care’s consumer-directed care model\, the Support at Home program\, and the single assessment service. These initiatives are designed to empower frail older individuals living in the community by offering greater choice\, control\, and independence over their care\, allowing them to live safely and with dignity in their own homes. \nThe conference will delve into the successes and challenges of these reforms while exploring culturally appropriate models of support and engagement\, ensuring that First Nations Elders can live life on their own terms. Acknowledging the power of storytelling within Aboriginal & Torres Straits communities\, the event will highlight how cultural practices can foster healing and build stronger community connections\, setting a path for the future of aged care services. \nA central theme of the conference will be the continued empowerment of First Nations Elders\, ensuring they have true “choice and control” over their care. Attendees will work together to create culturally respectful\, adaptable resources and tools to navigate the evolving landscape of community services\, disability\, and aged care. This collaboration will ensure that First Nations Elders are equipped to make decisions that reflect their personal needs\, values\, and aspirations\, allowing them to live with respect\, autonomy\, and safety. \nThis conference aims to highlight the eight priority areas which My Aged Care clients identified as important to them\, based on the survey results outlined in the Consumer Experience Report (CER) for home-based and community-based aged care services. These priority areas include but are not limited to: control\, Interpersonal interaction\, Flexibility\, Local residence in Country\, Affordability\, Administrative and financial literacy\, Safety and Timeliness of service provision. Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander Elders and their families would more likely access aged care services when it allows them to stay on Country\, being cared for by their own mob and the ability to maintain their connection to country\, culture and community. \nThe conference will also be a great resource and avenue to identify models of support and engagement that reflect various cultural practices of our communities\, to ensure that First Nations Peoples who are frail aged can live life their way. Sharing stories and story-telling is so strong in Aboriginal communities\, in that it leads the way to support healing in our community so we can move forward and get things right. Reflecting the importance of culturally respectful planning resources and tools to adapt the changes in community services\, disability and aged care sectors\, that is our Elders will have “choice and control” over their own lives and empowered to make decisions for their own care\, according to their personal needs and wants. \nFurthermore\, the conference also aims to give a voice to frail aged\, over 50 years old Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander Elders and their family carers to share their needs\, their concerns and share their story and experiences. Similarly\, this conference presents a chance for Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander frontline aged care support workers\, mainstream community and allied health workers serving First Nations Peoples who are frail aged\, to engage with industry leaders and peers\, learn cutting edge innovations and techniques as well as hear firsthand experiences from Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander Community Elders . The conference will also examine innovative ways to activate and engage family carers in employment opportunities and challenge delegates individually and collectively to identify the way forward for their organisations. This conference is for anyone who is interested in strengthening and upholding the rights of our Elders. With a rich diversity of speakers\, delegates and exhibitors\, this two-day conference will empower you\, inspire you and invigorate your passion for supporting your clients to reach their goals of keeping their independence and stay at home for as long as they can\, stay on Country as safe as they can. \nThe 2025 National First Nations Elder’s Wellbeing Conference focuses on how service providers are finding ways to deliver high quality support to First Nations peoples who are frail aged in the My Aged Care context to tackle some of the difficult issues that have threatened to derail the delivery of My Aged Care in our communities. The conference themes include: \n\n\nControl Over Health & Wellbeing \n\n\nCommunity Living – housing and supported living accommodation \n\n\nResidential and Centre-based Day Respite Services \n\n\nMobility & Transport \n\n\nLife skills\, education and employment \n\n\nAged Care Workforce Sector Development \n\n\nGeriatric Nurse Patient Ratio in Residential Facilities \n\n\nTechnology & Innovations \n\n\nReablement \n\n\nThe conference will highlight how service providers are working together\, with government and with Aboriginal and Torres Straits Islander peoples and their families to find innovative ways to address the above topics. The conference will include keynote speakers\, practical workshops and concurrent sessions as well as yarning circles and interactive panel discussions. \nThe conference is not politically based\, rather should be seen as an opportunity to access information that is not readily available. The conference envisions that partnerships and working in unison should form the basis of closing the gap in Indigenous disadvantage\, particularly in Aboriginal & Torres Straits Islander peoples whose living with a disability. \n\nWHO SHOULD ATTEND\n\n\n\nCommunity Support Workers and Aged Care Workers \n\n\nIndigenous Community Workers \n\n\nAboriginal and Torres Straits Islander Elders \n\n\nNurses\, Doctors\, Psychiatrists\, Social Workers and Allied Health Workers \n\n\nCommunity groups and Human Rights Enthusiasts \n\n\nFamily relationship workers \n\n\nElders and Community leaders \n\n\nIndigenous women’s and men’s groups \n\n\nCEOs\, Executive Management\, Program Managers \n\n\nFirst Nations groups\, Human Rights Enthusiasts \n\n\nGovernment and Non-Government Organisation Representatives \n\n\nField\, Remote & Rural Health Workers \n\n\n8 to 10 December 2025\, Gold Coast \nRegister here

SUMMARY:Trauma Aware\, Healing Informed Care for Forgotten Australians and Care Leavers (webinar)
DESCRIPTION:Free training webinars are available for aged care staff on Trauma Aware\, Healing Informed Aged Care for Forgotten Australians and Care Leavers. With the Strengthened Standards and new legislative requirements to provide trauma aware\, healing informed aged care\, this work is more important than ever. The Real Care the Second Time Around Project worked alongside people who identify as Forgotten Australians or Care Leavers to co-design the training and resources. \nReal Care the Second Time Around Project\nThis webinar is part of the Real Care the Second Time Around project\, designed to support aged care providers to provide trauma aware services for care leavers\, and to give Care Leavers practical information about the questions they can ask and what to expect in aged care. The resources and training are free and are available at www.realcaretoolkit.com.au. The training and resources will assist any provider wishing to apply for specialisation under the Verification Framework. The Real Care the Second Time Around Project has been developed by Helping Hand Aged Care\, Relationships Australia South Australia and Flinders University. \nForgotten Australians and Care Leavers*\nForgotten Australians and Care Leavers refers to the 500\,000 children that were placed into institutional and out-of-home care in Australia in the last century. Of this group\, 7\,000 were former child migrants\, 50\,000 were indigenous children from the Stolen Generations and over 440\,000 were non-indigenous children.  Forgotten Australians and Care Leavers often face barriers to accessing aged care and the idea of requiring care as they age can be deeply retraumatising as their experiences as children in care were often traumatic.\n*We respect that not everyone will identify with the terminology ‘Forgotten Australians’. \nAudience: The training is suitable for everyone working in aged care. While there is a focus on residential care\, the learnings also apply to home care. \nCost: Free to attend \nAny questions\, please contact clewis@helpinghand.org.au \nMultiple Dates: Each of the following webinars are the same – you only need to attend once. \nWednesday 20 August 2025\, 1:00pm to 2:30pm Sydney time (here)\nWednedsay 17 September 2025\, 1:00pm to 2:30pm Sydney time (here)\nFriday 15 October 2025\, 2:00pm to 3:30pm Sydney time (here)\nWednesday 26 November 2025\, 2:00pm to 3:30pm Sydney time (here)\nWednesday 10 December 2025\, 2:00pm to 3:30pm Sydney time (here)

SUMMARY:Volunteer & Community Information Session: Compassionate Connectors (Hornsby)
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer & Community Information Session: “Caring for each other at end-of-life” \nIn this interactive information session you will learn about the Compassionate Connector Program. This session is for anyone interested in having a conversation about things that support us to live well in the end. There is no pressure to join the Program. \nWhat is the Compassionate Connector Program?\nThis program is designed to connect people in the community who are over 65 living with a life changing diagnosis with Compassionate Connectors (volunteers). The aim is to maintain and build social networks\, enabling participants to remain at home in the Community for longer. It is jointly funded by the Sydney North Health Network and The Wicking Trust\, and delivered by not-for-profit provider Proveda. \n\nHow the Program Works\nProveda works with trained volunteers (called Connectors) and friends\, family\, or neighbours (called Willing Helpers) to support eligible participants who require social (rather than clinical) support to help carry out tasks many of us take for granted. \n\nWhat is a Connector?\nA ‘Connector’ is a volunteer who connects with older people living with a life changing diagnosis\, to identify social and practical supports required from their local community\, so they can remain at home for longer. Connectors often have some caring experience\, an understanding of working in the palliative care sector\, or have knowledge around supports which may be required for people living with a life changing diagnosis and end of life care. \n\nWho can become a Willing Helper?\nPractical support is offered by “willing helpers”. These helpers are volunteers from within the family\, friends\, neighbours or members of the community who are happy to help without expectation of payment. Willing helpers help with tasks such as dog walking\, gardening\, transporting to appointments\, tidying up or sitting with someone who needs a break. \nFor further information contact connectorprogram@proveda.com.au \nRegister for the info session here.

SUMMARY:Professional practice and tackling ageism: Building capacity and resilience to improve wellbeing (online workshop)
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore the insidious impacts of our ageist society on the older person. Learn how we as in home care providers can improve our service delivery by adopting a strengths-based approach and recognising the older person is the expert in their own health and wellness. Ageism in aged care can have significant impacts on the health and wellbeing of older people. Ageism can often go unnoticed because it is often subtle and normalised\, so combatting ageism begins with reflecting on our own unconscious bias when working with older people. \nInvitation open to: CHSP providers\, case managers\, team leaders\, and support workers. \nThis is a collaborative event between the Sector Support and Development Teams of Your Side and Ku-ring-gai Council. \nRegister here
